I was excited when I read that Sunny Side Up, a cafe located on the Upper Richmond road, was offering American Pancakes on the breakfast menu. Even more so when I saw the cute dining booths and Americana tat. My Judy Blumesque teenage dream had come to Mortlake. So to start Nathan’s birthday off I took him there for a special boothy breakfast.
The staff are very friendly – the owner in particular keen to help. He showed us to our booth, which sadly turned out to be more like a carriage on a Ferris wheel than booth, but with less leg room.
A smiley nervous waitress gave us a floppy overpopulated yellow laminated menu and came back to take our order of:
American pancakes with syrup and bacon
Scrambled eggs on toast with beans
I should have known something was wrong when she looked anxiously over her shoulder at the owner when we said “scrambled”.
Anyhow I’ll make this quick.
The food was terrible. Probably the worst dining experience we’ve ever had.
Our breakfast came out separately and I don’t mean that Nathan got his before mine. I mean the individual items came out separately and quite a few minutes apart – a bit like tapas. The pancakes were mushy and the bacon when it turned up was watery and undercooked. The scrambled eggs? The chef had quite literally broken an egg into a bowl stirred it once and microwaved it to within a inch of it’s life. Saving grace? The tea. It was warm at least.
This is a cafe that could be a real gem for the young families of Mortlake and in particular the teenagers. But for the moment some very dark clouds are over Sunny Side Up.
